Celia Sánchez-Ramos scientist and researcher in the field of Vision Sciences. Tenure Lecturer at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, PhD in the area of Preventive Medicine, Diploma in Optics, and Researcher with the Neuro-Computation and Neuro-Robotics Group of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid.

Awarded the Best Inventor of 2009 prize (Premio a la Mejor Inventora del Año 2009). Her contributions to the field of Vision Sciences include a patent for yellow filter lenses; these represent a paradigm shift in the world of optics, from refractive through to preventive optics.

Biography

Celia Sánchez-Ramos gained her PhD in Pharmacy in the area of Preventice Medicine in 1994. She is a well established optician-optometrist and Tenure Lecturer at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. The scientific research undertaken by the Neuro-Computation and Neuro-Robotics Group has led to her filing many patents, and publishing many articles in the fields of optometry

, contactology, vision sciences and ocular biometrics, areas in which she has now worked for more than 25 years.

She has filed 13 patents, including one for therapeutic contact lenses for pseudophakic eyes and/or eyes suffering neurodegeneration. The latter innovation led to her being awarded, in April 2009, the Best Invention presented by a Woman Inventor of 2009 prize (Premio a la Mejor Inventora del Año 2009) by the UN World Intellectual Property Organization, the Gold Medal (with congratulations of the jury) for the Best Invention in the Healthcare Area, and the Best Spanish Patent prize, awarded by the Spanish Office of Patents and Trademarks (Oficina Española de Patentes y Marcas).

She is a strong defender of continuous training, being Director of Expert and Specialist On-line University Courses in the Area of Healthcare. She is a Scientific Content and Training Courses Consultant for the Johnson & Johnson Medical Group. She is also a member of the Scientific Committee of the Fundación Retina Madrid, assessor for the Comunidad de Madrid (Agencia Laín Entrialgo), and a reviewer of scientific publications. She is also consultant to a number of private businesses in her areas of expertise.

In June 2006, she founded the spin-off firm, belonging to the Universidad Complutense de Madrid known as Alta Eficacia Tecnología S.L., the aim of which is to market products related to the Alta Eficacia Method

, patents and models of use in the fileds of optometry, contactology, biometrics and neuroscience. Celia Sánchez-Ramos is a representative of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid for the organization of national and international congresses.

Current activities (2009)

As reported in a number of interviews, the activity of Celia Sánchez-Ramos is currently focused on four areas: teaching, research, innovation and social responsibility.

A number of forums have considered her research group to be leader in the protection of research findings via the use of patent offices, deeming intellectual property arising from research an important asset for society. Since 2005, she has organized Intellectual Property Workshops of the highest level; events that have united the efforts of public authorities, businesses, universities and research centres.

Dr. Sánchez-Ramos also shows her solidarity with social issues, having undertaken several projects with development in mind. “We cannot continue to ignore it. In Paraguay, there are 70,000 blinded by cataracts. In Europe, blindness caused by cataracts is now practically unknown,” she has publicly said.

Yellow filter lenses

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness in the developed world.

Blue and violet light of the visible spectrum have been related to the physiopathogenesis of AMD. The yellow filter lenses developed by Celia Sánchez-Ramos absorb the blue/violet portion of the spectrum and therefore protect the retina from the harmful effects of these rays.
