 (1988) by Bohemia Interactive.

Technical

The game uses Bohemia's newly developed, in-house engine featuring Next-Gen rendering techniques and physics, and contains 2 main modes of play - Strategy and Campaign. The Strategy mode is quite similar to the original 80s classic, while the Campaign mode presents players with story-based progression, partially serving as a tutorial to learn the various functions of the game.

Game world

The game features a vast, 33-island archipelago on the planet-moon Taurus, and features real-time weather changes and day/night cycles. Travelling between islands is completely real-time and seamless, with islands being composed of 6 distinct climatic zones, including Wastelands, Arctic, Marshlands, Volcanic, Mountains and Temperate. The player's fundamental unit is the Carrier, from which he may deploy and dock up to 4 Aerial units and 4 Amphibious units, among other defensive and offensive systems, such as drones to protect the Carrier when under attack. Battles take place over air, land and sea in a combination of Real-Time Strategy, Action and First-Person Shooter.

Elements

The game features 3 key elements:
  • Strategy - Deciding how to set up one's own islands' types (Defense, Mining, Production) to maximize efficiency, choosing which island to set as a Stockpile and evaluating which enemy island to attack next.
  • Tactics - Formulating an attack plan on the islands themselves, keeping objectives in mind with a primary goal to take the enemy Command Centre.
  • Action - Leading the battle remotely from the Carrier, taking direct control of individual units if desired.

The unique aspect of this modern remake is the ability to play it as an RTS

, or an Action game or even a mix of both. The radial menu (accessed while in direct control of a unit) allows for easy access to unit orders, allowing the player to lead the attack without using the tactical map. At the same time, the player may instead choose to lead the entire assault solely using the tactical map to issue unit commands.

Apart from this, the Campaign features several First-Person Shooter missions. Located at logical points in the campaign story, the player's character himself is deployed to deal with situations that cannot be otherwise dealt with from the safety of the Carrier.

Plot

You are the commander of a near-future aircraft carrier of immense power, with many tools and vehicles at your disposal. Landing in an unfamiliar, free-roaming environment, exploration will be key and the thrill of discovery will spur you onward.

The colony planetoid of Taurus is a pivotal battleground in the United Earth Coalition (UEC)'s long campaign against the rogue Asian Pacific Alliance (APA), who gained dominion over Earth in an apocalyptic conflict. The wide oceans of Taurus are dotted with resource-rich islands of varying composition and hide many secrets.
