tournament was inaugurated in 1934, Johnstone was selected to lead the Madras provincial team. In the first and only match played by Madras in the 1934 edition, Madras bowled out their opponents Mysore for 48 and 59 and won within a single day by an innings and 23 runs. Madras,under Johnstone's captaincy, emerged the runners-up in the 1935 Ranji Tropy losing to Bombay in the final.
