The school is named after real estate developer Cecil D. Hylton, who built thousands of homes in Dale City, Virginia
and surrounding areas. Cecil D. Hylton donated the land for the school, which opened in 1991.

, although it was built 13 years earlier.
The school's football team is regarded as a Virginia state powerhouse; Going a commendable 11-1 this year and 21-2 the past two years, making the playoffs both two years, but have actually been good in the past winning 3 Group AAA Division 6 state titles since 1998.
The school is also notable for its Center for International Studies and Languages (CISL) specialty program and the Television Prodcution specialty program. Hylton is also notable for the Hylton High School Troubadours, Concert Choir, and Sons of Pitch.
In 2011, Mrs. Carolyn Custard became the Director of Student Services for Prince William County Public School.
In May 2007, Newsweek Magazine ranked Hylton High School, 298th in the nation on its annual list of "Best High Schools in America."
