A native of San Francisco's Parkside district, Yee's parents hailed from the Canton region of China from which they immigrated in 1956. She worked in her family's neighborhood business (laundry and dry cleaning) while growing up. Originally speaking no English she spent her grade school years in the San Francisco Unified School District before attending UC Berkley

Yee was elected in her own right to the California Board of Equalization in 2006 from the 1st Board District and won re-election in 2010.

Betty Yee currently serves on the State Board of Directors as Secretary for California Women Lead, a women's nonprofit, nonpartisan organization.
