History

During the 1600s the forests started to disappear and at that time Gothenburg needed a lot of wood. At the end of the 1700s the forests were gone. The current spruce in Bergsjön was planted around 1910. In late 1800 and early 1900s a few simple residences in Bergsjön was built.
There were simple huts, often with only one room, fireplace and earth floor. Dykärr at Rymdtorget, Spakens at Björnväktarens street and Gröna Vrån near Galileis street are some of these places.

Gärdsås residential area began to be built in the 1920s and may well be considered the first modern buildings in Bergsjön. The communications and the service were bad but the low land prices made the area attractive to people especially among workers at the factories in Gamlestaden. The simple residences disappeared when the construction of today’s Bergsjön started. A place was still there and was inhabited until 1990. It was Gåselyckan the southern part of Bergsjövallen that was built 1916.The construction of today’s Bergsjön began in the 1960s and was planned as a very modern area. All streets and neighborhoods were named with the space theme.

1960s was the space age where more and more satellites was launched to explore the space. In 1950s the new suburbs were called “satellite cities” that independently circled around the centre of the city. The concept has gotten an extra importance in Bergsjön as the street names have a space theme. Car traffic was separated from the residential areas. Here are mostly rental apartments but also condominiums, townhouses and villas.

When the first sod was cut in 1965, it was a thin layer of soil over the 2000 million years old bedrock shoveled away. This was to be built modern homes for the future Bergsjön inhabitants. New neighborhoods were needed during the industry expansions in the 1960s when Backa and Västra Frölunda were already planned.

Gothenburg felt fully build and the reserve areas in the “generalplanen” from the 1959 must be taken. In forested areas beyond end of the line in Kortedala “bostadsdirektörer” and city planners found a hilly area where the tramway could be extended. Bergsjön was a bit of a comprise solution in a time of pressure and had started to be planned in 1963.
