Regional Geology

Barreme is a young Tertiary thrust sheet top basin, riding on the Digne thrust which proagates westwards. This fact means that the local topography reflects the geology very accuratley. So, anticlines and hard rocks are the high ground while synclines and soft rocks form the low ground. The basement is Cretaceous limestone and shale which are unconformably below the Tertiary fill of the basin. There are two units in the Tertiary fill of the basin, an older transgressive unit with the younger terrestrial unit unconformably on top of this. This tectonically driven region has major N-S trending thrusts sympathetic to the digne thrust. There are gypsum bodies which have been ducltily deformed to preduce sheath folds. These occur on multiple stratigraphic horizons.
