Schönhage designed and implemented together with Andreas F. W. Grotefeld and Ekkehart Vetter a multitape Turing machine

, called TP, in software. The machine is programmed in TPAL, an assembler language. They implemented numerous numerical algorithms including the Schönhage–Strassen algorithm on this machine.
