Argja Bóltfelag
Encyclopedia
Argja Bóltfelag is an Faroese
football
club based in Argir
. They played in the 1. deild
, the second highest division in Faroese football, and they came in as runners up in second place, so now they played in Faroe Islands Premier League in 2010. However, they ended as number 10 and are now back in 1. deild
in 2011. They play their home games at Vika Stadium in Argir.
Initially the team didn't have very good training facilities and rented a school playground. Later they got a small ground to train on, but it was only 20 x 40 m² in measurements. There was no football field on Argjum at the time, but they were allowed to loan the Gundadalur, which belongs to HB and B36
. AB practiced and played their matches at the Gundadalur and this helped the team to survive.
In 1983 a football field was built on Argjum and now had better training facilities. Having their own ground helped the team a lot and in 1985 a new two-storey house was built for AB. AB got the lower storey and the second storey was used as a school classroom.
In 1998 artificial grass was laid on the football field. For some years, the second storey remained as a school classroom for young children. By 2004 AB had grown enough to get the whole house.
From 2000 Tórálvur Stenberg became the chairman fof AB and he brought them from the 3rd division
all the way to Formuladeildin in 2006. Sadly, he did not see AB play in Formuladeildina, because he died of cancer in the autumn. Stenberg was the first to become an honorary member of the team. He put his life and soul into Argja Bóltfelag. Two of his sons, Jónas and Heðin Stenberg, play for AB.
AB's first season in the Vodafonedeildin wasn't very successful and were relegated along with VB/Sumba, finishing in 9th place. Though in the season afterwards, they bounced right back and were promoted again after finishing runner-ups in 1. deild
.
They currently still play in the Vodafonedeildin.
word for a male cat, and it is used as a nickname for the local people in Argir
; they are called argjafrensar (frensar being the plural form of frensur).
The supporters club was founded in 2006. The first board of Frensurin were: Steinbjørn Olsen, Chairman; Regin Dalgarð accountant; and Petur Midjord secretary.
The rule of the supporters was that they always have to be in good mood and have to cheer on the team.
Frensurin did make a real noise, went to the match between B36 Tórshavn
and AB Argir, when they played in the Faroese Cup (Løgmannssteypið). B36 Tórshavn was the former Cup winners, and AB had something to show. The fans were really happy, when AB scored to 0-1. But that is not the only thing that happened; AB did win the match 1-3, and the fans ran in to the pitch to congratulate the players.
Frensurin cheered a lot for AB, and as the cheering did go on, they started to sing, and it was the melody to The Beatles
' Yellow Submarine
. The referee must have thought that the song was for him, because he gave a lot of yellow cards.
When B36 Tórshavn
and AB played, Frensurin only cheered on one of the players from B36 Tórshavn
, and it was none other than Allan Mørkøre
, now Manager of AB, but when he played with B36 Tórshavn, he was transferred from AB to B36 Tórshavn, and then later that season he came back to AB.
Frensurin did win something, because at the end of the year they won an award: The Noisiest Support Team and Best Support Team 2007 Award.
