So far, Anderson has won only one tournament for Benfica: the Portuguese Supercup (in 2005/2006).

The Brazilian player has stated more than once that he would like to leave Benfica because the team's manager, Fernando Santos, does not play him where he likes the most: the left-center side of the defense (Luisão's position). Anderson says, "if I had played in my position, I would surely had demonstrated everything I did at Corinthians and that eventually got me in the Brazilian National Team". This is subject to debate and is subjective. He also said: "It's a situation that I respect because Luisão represents a lot to Benfica and to its supporters, but it's complicated for me because, if I have to play, I have to do it on the other side. Even if I am on the top of my form, I will never achieve the level I can when playing in my natural position"http://www.record.pt/noticia.asp?id=750055&idCanal=11. Struggling with his son's illness http://relvado.aeiou.pt/?st=60675, Anderson has expressed his will to return to Brazil and has been suspended by Benfica for missing an international pre-season match in Romania http://www.rr.pt/BolaBrancaDetalhe.aspx?AreaId=12&SubAreaId=24&SubSubAreaId=73&ContentId=214176. For example, he's not even in the Brazil National Team".

He never really took off at Benfica, where competition was high, with Brazilian international Luizao relegating Anderson to occasional appearances only.
