named Riff, all try to learn about the world around them with the help of their neighborhood friends. At the end of each episode, Allegra sits at her window and reflects on all the lessons she has learned. Most things in the show had something to do with music, such as the dog being named Lindy (a type of dance), Rondo (another type of dance), Thizzle (another dance), Riff (as in a guitar riff), and the title character's name itself, with allegro being a cheerful tempo.

The original decision to use the name Allegra for the show's protagonist occurred after executive producer Jan Fleming-Chandler attended a dinner party at the house of some London-based academic friends and was struck by the cuteness of their youngest daughter, Allegra Collins. That evening she told the parents that she would have the little girl at the center of the project she was working on named after their daughter. Many songs were sung in this show, further adding to the musical theme. There were also a talking bass and tuba that showed up from time to time. The bass was the tuba's mother and was always scolding him to play beautiful music, when he only wanted to play jazz.
