English Translation of verses

English Translation by Muhammad Shameem, Mohammad Wali Raazi and Muhammad Taqi Usmani:

I swear by the sky, the one having stellar formations, [1] and by the Promised Day, [2] and by that which attends, and that which is attended, [3] cursed were the People of the Trench, [4] the (people of the) fire that was rich with fuel, [5] when they were sitting by it, [6] and were watching what they were doing with the believers. [7] And they had blamed them for nothing but that they believed in Allah, the All-Mighty, the Worthy of All Praise, [8] the One to whom belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth. And Allah is witness over every thing. [9] Surely, those who persecuted the believing men and the believing women, then did not repent, for them there is the torment of Jahannam (Hell), and for them there is the torment of burning. [10] As for those who believed and did righteous deeds, for them there are gardens beneath which rivers flow. That is the big achievement. [11] The seizure of your Lord is severe indeed! [12] Surely He originates (creation) and repeats (it after death). [13] And He is the Most-Forgiving, the Most-Loving, [14] the Master of the Throne, the Glorious. [15] He is ever doer of what He intends. [16] Has the come to you the story of the forces, [17] of Fir'aun (the Pharaoh) and Thamud? [18] But those who disbelieve are (engaged) in denying (the truth). [19] And Allah has encircled them from all sides. [20] The reality is that it is the glorious Qur'an, [21] (recorded) in the Preserved Tablet (Lauh Mahfuz). [22]

English Translation by Mohammed Marmaduke Pickthall:

By the heaven, holding mansions of the stars, [1] And by the Promised Day. [2] And by the witness and that whereunto he beareth testimony, [3] (Self) destroyed were the owners of the ditch [4] Of the fuel fed fire, [5] When they sat by it, [6] And were themselves the witnesses of what they did to the believers. [7] They had naught against them save that they believed in Allah, the Mighty, the Owner of Praise, [8] Him unto Whom belongeth the Sovereignty off the heavens and the earth; and Allah is of all things the Witness. [9] Lo! they who persecute believing men and believing women and repent not, theirs verily will be the doom of hell, and theirs the doom of burning. [10] Lo! those who believe and do good works, theirs will be Gardens underneath which rivers flow. That is the Great Success. [11] Lo! the punishment of thy Lord is stern. [12] Lo! He it is Who produceth, then reproduceth, [13] And He is the Forgiving, the loving, [14] Lord of the Throne of Glory, [15] Doer of what He will. [16] Hath there come unto thee the story of the hosts [17] Of Pharaoh and (the tribe of) Thamud? [18] Nay, but those who disbelieve live in denial [19] And Allah, all unseen, surroundeth them. [20] Nay, but it is a glorious Qur’an [21] On a guarded tablet. [22]

English Translation by Yusuf Ali:

By the sky, (displaying) the Zodiacal Signs; [1] By the promised Day (of Judgment); [2] By one that witnesses, and the subject of the witness;- [3] Woe to the makers of the pit (of fire), [4] Fire supplied (abundantly) with fuel: [5] Behold! they sat over against the (fire), [6] And they witnessed (all) that they were doing against the Believers. [7] And they ill-treated them for no other reason than that they believed in Allah, Exalted in Power, Worthy of all Praise!- [8] Him to Whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth! And Allah is Witness to all things. [9] Those who persecute (or draw into temptation) the Believers, men and women, and do not turn in repentance, will have the Penalty of Hell: They will have the Penalty of the Burning Fire. [10] For those who believe and do righteous deeds, will be Gardens; beneath which rivers flow: That is the great Salvation, (the fulfilment of all desires), [11] Truly strong is the Grip (and Power) of thy Lord. [12] It is He Who creates from the very beginning, and He can restore (life). [13] And He is the Oft-Forgiving, Full of Loving-Kindness, [14] Lord of the Throne of Glory, [15] Doer (without let) of all that He intends. [16] Has the story reached thee, of the forces- [17] Of Pharaoh and the Thamud? [18] And yet the Unbelievers (persist) in rejecting (the Truth)! [19] But Allah doth encompass them from behind! [20] Day, this is a Glorious Qur'an, [21] (Inscribed) in a Tablet Preserved! [22]

Detailed Explanation of Verses

Say, In (or with) the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

Beginning is with Allah's personal name Ar'Reh'maan Who is The Fountain of Infinite Mercy.
[Note: It should be remembered that it is not the written text/part/Ayah of سُورة [Chapter 85] and hence it is never numbered. For convenience of those readers who are already believers, this is traditionally printed since it is commanded in the Qur'aan to read/recite with the Name of Sustainer Lord, The Creator]
