The 
2001 IIHF World Women's Championships Pool B were held between March 20-March 25, 2001 in the city of Briancon in France.  Switzerland won the tournament with a narrow 2-1 victory over Japan in the final.
2001 Qualification Tournament
Continuing the format from the previous year, the five teams that were ranked 2nd to 7th stayed in Group B, being joined by the winner of the  qualification tournament and the relegated team from the World Championship.

World Championship Group B
The eight participating teams were divided up into two seeded groups as below. The teams played each other once in a single round robin format. The top two teams from the group proceeded to the Final Round, while the remaining teams played in the Consolation Round. In the placing rounds, the first place teams played each other for the Final, the 2nd places for the Match for third place etc.
The winning team in the tournament was promoted to the 2001 World Championship, while the bottom two teams would be relegated to the 2003 Group B Qualification tournament.
