A punch-card has a cut corner in order to present a standard orientation to the reader (either human or machine) from which the data recorded on the card (or through the card, in the case of a punch on an x/y axis) can be interpreted. That is: the notched-corner establishes a "horizon" in relation to which the reader can distinguish "up" from "down" and "left" from "right."
