Dimetrodon was most definitely a carnivore. Its name means two measures of teeth. It is in reference to its enlarged canines which it used to shred its prey. EVOLUTIONARY PATTERNS IN THE HISTORY OF PERMO-TRIASSIC AND CENOZOIC SYNAPSID PREDATORS by Blaire Van Valkenburgh and Ian Jenkins gives a great technical description of Dimetrodon and its descendants.
