On the Upper Niagara River, how is it barricaded or how is the passage closed to boaters so they won't get into the current and be swept down stream? How close do boaters get to the falls on the American side- 7 or 8 or 9 miles?

I believe the general rule is dont go past the north grand island bridges. I think 7 miles would a good guess. it looks more like 2-3miles. The niagara is not a lazy river It has a very strong current from start to finish.
Im from Buffalo, i see it every day. To avoid that nasty current. There is a lock that gives boats a much safer route in the Black Rock section of Buffalo
