Jesus Teaches the Greatest Commandment

Matthew 22: 34 - 46

Mark 12: 28 - 37

Luke 10: 25 - 28

Luke 20: 41- 44

Leviticus 19: 17 - 18

In Jesus' lifetime, the Temple in Jerusalem was home to many lively discussions.

One of the questions asked of many rabbis was to recite the entire Old Testament while standing on one foot. Rabbi Hillel answered by quoting Leviticus 19: 18, to love others as much as you love yourself.

Jesus was asked this question in a different fashion - and his answer was a little different, too.

1. Who had Jesus been talking to?

[Jesus had been arguing with the Sadducees.]

2. What question did the teacher of the law ask Jesus?

[The teacher asked, "What is the most important commandment?"]

3. What did Jesus say was the most important commandment?

[Jesus said, "People of Israel, you have only one Lord and God. You must love him with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength."]

4. What did Jesus say was the second most important commandment?

[Jesus said, "Love others as much as you love yourself."]

36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Matt 22:36-39 (KJV)

Hillel (הלל) (born Babylon traditionally c.110BCE-10CE[1] in Jerusalem) was a famous Jewish religious leader, one of the most important figures in Jewish history. He is associated with the development of the Mishnah and the Talmud. Renowned within Judaism as a sage and scholar, he was the founder of the House of Hillel school for Tannaïm (Sages of the Mishnah) and the founder of a dynasty of Sages who stood at the head of the Jews living in the land of Israel until roughly the fifth century of the Christian Era.
He is popularly known as the author of two sayings: "If I am not for myself, who will be for me? And when I am for myself, what am 'I'? And if not now, when?"[2] and the expression of the ethic of reciprocity, or "Golden Rule": "That which is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow. That is the whole Torah; the rest is the explanation; go and learn."[3]
Hillel lived in Jerusalem during the time of King Herod and the Roman Emperor Augustus. In the Midrash compilation Sifre (Deut. 357) the periods of Hillel's life are made parallel to those in the life of Moses. Both lived 120 years Deut. 34:7, and at the age of forty Hillel went to the Land of Israel; forty years he spent in study; and the last third of his life he was the spiritual head of the Jewish people. A biographical sketch can be constructed; that Hillel went to Jerusalem in the prime of his life and attained a great age. His activity of forty years likely covered the period of 30 BCE to 10 CE.

Another Aspect of John 3:16

And God so loved the world that, to teach Mankind what love is, He became a Jew. That's a truth that every single Christian believes in it, but refuses to behave as such.

To start with the NT and its false charge that Jews have killed Jesus, a serial persecution has been developed since the Church got organized by Constatine and up to this very day, through pogroms, blood libels, Crusades, Inquisition, and last but not least, the Holocaust of only 70 years ago, when millions of Jewish lives have been destroyed. I guess God made a mistake. Mankind was not ready to be taught what love is.
