Are you refering to the the German Enigma coding machine?Which was in service to all three German military forces, from about 1930 onwards.

The Enigma Machine was an extremely complex code machine.Invented by the Germans in the 1930's who thought the machine codes were unbreakable.
Each service,Air force,Navy and the Army had their own Enigma codes. The object was to transport information between each service, and each service could communicate with their respective service branches.
Information on the enigma came from the Polish underground, just prior to the Germans invading their country in 1939.
Just before the outbreak of WW 2, the British code breakers moved to an old mansion house in Bletchley Buckinghamshire. There after referred to as BP.
The Enigma codes were broken as follows.Air force 1940. Army and Navy 1941.Ultra was the name given to the information that was distilled from the codes, and given to each British service who it involved. The Americans were also given access to this information when they joined the British in 1942. It was thought that breaking the Enigma code shortened the war by at least 2 years.
