Stalingrad was important to Hitler because it was a major industrial center on the Volga River. The German capture of Stalingrad would have broken Soviet supply lines to Northern Russia.

The capture of Stalingrad would have protected the left flank of the German Army as it marched into the Caucasus region to take possession of Soviet fuel sources.
