It was a contemporary style from back then, a follow up of the Greek trend of making nude sculptures.
Nudity says that the message is clear and the messenger has nothing to hide. Additionally, the class that David represents is poor, but their bare bodies are enough to stand up against their well-suited and armored rivals. But, more important characteristic than nudity is the contraposto stand and his threatening look towards Medici headquarters.
