Scarlett O'Hara is one of the strongest female characters in literature. She stands out as a realistic character because, while she is strong, determined, and self-reliant, she is also stubborn, selfish and petty.

While Scarlett is seen by some feminists as needing a man to be happy, she enters all three of her marriages with some alterior motive, other than love.
