Why are they called non-directional beacons?

It would infer that they do not broadcast in any direction at all?

I would think that omnidirectional would be much more accurate and widely understand term.

Of course, I know next to nothing about this technology, so please drop some science on me!

The transmission of non-directional beacons do of course have a direction. The name indicates that the signals do not contain within them directional information.

By contrast, VHF omnidirectional transmissions (for example) carry data that allows the airborne receiving equipment to derive a magnetic bearing.
