I offer a very belated thank you for your very informative article of April 1, 2004; “Why We Must Never Forget the Rwandan Genocide.” (“Rwanda Ten Years After the Genocide” was equally commendable).
I have been following Sudan and Darfur issues for some time and I find it exceedingly curious (and disturbing) that human beings can impose such intense suffering against one another. I recall a story (my thoughts initiated by the horrendous and vulgar murders by machete in Rwanda) which describes Darfuran women being gang raped by Janjaweed. The vulgarity is exacerbated by Arab women cheering on the perpetrators as it happened.
I would suspect that a multitude of reasons could be conjectured for these crimes (and the vulgar brutality) but two come to mind. One, the absence of respect for the rule of law. And, two, an inability to respond to hostility in an “acceptable” manner. In other words acceptable responses have not been learned. I suspect that your research offers much greater insight.
Thank you again for your excellent material.
I wish you the very best in your efforts.
Respectfully,
Dennis E. Paul
