Replied to:  Who prevented Virgil and Dante from entering the Sixth Circle?
Virgil and Dante were ferried over the marshy river of Styx by the angry oarsman Phlegyas, where they observed the punishment of the slothful and wrathful. After a tense encounter with Dante's old rival Filippo Argent, and witnessing the subsequent divine punishment, Dante and Virgil arrive at the gates of the city of Dis. From this point on, the sinners are actively punished by devils and demons. However, when they first try to gain entry, they are denied by the Furies, handmaidens of the guardian Medusa. They are furious at the success of the Greek hero Theseus, and call out Medusa to turn the virtuous human to stone. Virgil covers Dante's eyes, and after a brief outline of how the next few layers of Hell are organized, an angel is sent from heaven, and, after scolding the disobedient servants of Dis and threatening divine retribution, unlocks the gate with a touch. Without a word to Dante and Virgil, and angel disappears, concerned with more pressing matters back in Heaven.

Does this help? :P
