Bess' death was of no one's fault..

Yeah, the king's troops were partly blamed for their violent actions and his lover, the highwayman was also not an exception..

She did those actions because she willed to...not because the soldiers told her to do so nor did the highwayman ordered her to commit suicide to justify his name...

Maybe, her reason was to warn his lover(highwayman) of the ploy to ambush him when he comes near to her...She took precautionary actions as an act of her deep love to the highwayman..For me, she did not regret dying for her love XD

I got it Cinchez. Nice one. Bess was just so much in-love with the highwayman that she willed to take suicide.
