When was the term "storm surge" first used in relation to hurricanes? I grew up near the Louisiana Gulf Coast and remember the in-rush of water being called a "tidal wave" even though it was acknowledged that was not accurate.

I'm researching "storm surge" for a historical novel set in 1899.
