The area which later became the Dust Bowl was known in early American history as the Great American Desert. It was thought unsuitable for agriculture because of the lack of surface water and available timber.

Initial efforts at cattle ranching in the late 19th century led to modern agricultural afforts in the early 20th century. Erosion caused by these methods contributed to the Dust Bowl.
