African Americans migrated to escape racism, seek better jobs, get better education for their children, and in general pursue better lives for themselves and their families.

In the latter half of the 19th century, African Americans in Southern states found themselves increasingly oppressed by Jim Crow laws. In the years between 1910 and 1930, the African American population in Northern States grew by 40%.
