Hi Martin,

The only guy who got hit was the engine driver, Jack Mills and he wasn't hit that hard.

The police made a huge deal of his injury to turn the public against the robbers as they were fast becoming public heroes.

Hi Martin,

The only signalman who made a statement to the police was a
Thomas William Wyn-de-bank.

Hi Caroline,

Your uncle, David Whitby was indeed the second man. He left the engine to use the tarackside phone to ring and find out why the signal was red. The phone did not work and whilst returning to the engine he saw two people doing something to the second carriage coupling. He assumed they were railway personnel and approached them. He was grabbed and kept prisoner during the robbery. He didn't claim he was hit and I am sure the Police would have loved him to say he was so he probably wasn't!

I have a copy of his signed statement if you are interested.

One of my websites ; crimecollection.com has a lot of Robbery stuff on it. From there you can email me and I will send you a copy of David's statement,

all the best

Hi Caroline,

I hope you’re well. I have just found via this website that you are the niece of David Whitby the Secondman who was on board the train in the 1963 Great Train Robbery. I am currently working on a forthcoming project regarding the robbery and would like to discuss this project with you as well as answering any questions or concerns you may have. Please let me know how best to contact you directly and I look forward in hearing from you. Alternatively, if you would prefer not to be involved I would quite understand and respect your wishes.

Kind regards,
Lydia
