What is the name of the trees that hug the edge Lake Merritt, many near the Rotary Nature Center, which have twisted knotted trunks?

Hello,
Had same question. After research, believe they are Coastal Tea Trees, sometimes called Australian Tea Trees. The gnarled trunk, leaves and buds are identical.

Family: Myrtaceae (mir-TAY-see-ee)
Genus: Leptospermum (lep-toh-SPER-mum)
Species: laevigatum (lee-vih-GAY-tum)
An evergreen with gnarled trunk. Although not related to the common tea plant, you can make a tea from it which is very high in vitamin C...hence the name, Tea Tree.
