Stoker came across the name 'Dracula' while studying Romanian history, though it seems unlikely that he knew much about the historical Vlad Dracul.

Some believe that Stoker was inspired by the history of Countess Elizabeth Bathory of Hungary, who tortured and killed hundreds of young women in order to bathe in or drink their blood.

I don't think Stoker knew a whole lot about the actual Vlad Dracula. He probably ran across some odd about Romanian history references and the infamous woodcut of Dracula dining amongst the forest of impaled or something similar.
