Harpo used to hang out on Neshobe after he was befriended by Alexander Woollcott (theater critic) in 1924. Woollcott was one of the owners of the island but ended up buying everyone else out. In 'Harpo Speaks!' there are marvelous stories of the summers spent there. That led me to read anything about the Algonquin Round Table's mob of people like Woollcott, Dorothy Parker, Robert Sherwood, Heywood Broun, Robert Benchley, George S. Kaufman and many more. Do some research starting with the Algonquin crowd and there is plenty to read. Great bios about Woollcott, Benchley, Parker and Kaufman are to be found. There is also a great video about the Algonquinites narrated by Heywood Broun Jr. that is wonderful.

I've personally been on the island a couple of times in the mid/late 1980's. It's a chilling step back in time if you are at all familiar with the stories! Great mojo there, though.
