Contingencies of self-worth are the qualities a person believes he must possess as a prerequisite for self-esteem. Many people base their self-esteem on perceived virtues, love of God, or academic and professional achievement, among other things.

The trouble, of course, is that the source of self-esteem remains external; if a person who bases his self-esteem on professional achievement experiences a professional failure, his self-esteem may also suffer a severe blow.
