Was the bird house at the Detroit Zoo a hospital before being used for the Zoo? If not was there a hospital at that site before the Zoo?

The original bird house was the Wildlife Interpretive Gallery. Then the free flight aviary was added on in the '70's. The original bird house closed in the '80's and the Gallery opened in 1995. The free flight aviary still exists.
The zoo has a animal hospital though.

No--it was built in 1928 to showcase birds. The Original hospital was back near the Administration building and not open to the public areas.
You can read about this and other aspects of the Zoo's history in "Wonders Among Us" published by the Detroit Zoological Society (ISBN 0-615-12418-6)
