Who knows? - but in the book "Memoirs of a Geisha" it claims he was known in Japan before the war and friendly with Geishas - sorry, useless fact 200042!

LOL..I am interested because in Captain Blood his French is pretty good so I am not sure if it was because he was a good actor or he actually was fluent in French.
