Yes the school yard scene at the beginning of the movie was PS 83 on a hun ten street (as we called it back then) !!!!! As a kid I lived at 226 East 110 Street. The building was adjacent to the schoolyard and in the movie. My great grandfather owned the tenement.
During filming the crew would allow us kids into the school when they were on a break. They had even given my grandmother a bed sheet that said "JETS" to hang on her clothes line. ( She later used the sheet as rags when we moved to the Bronx). At the end of filming the crew through the neighborhood a block party.
