Timbre would ordinarily suggest something to do with wood. But for me it's immediate association is with sound, particularly with the sound and strength of the human voice. The timbre in many speaking voices impresses me. Whether it's Richard Burton or Amitabh Bachchan. Or the timbre in the singing voices of the likes of Maria Callas, Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammad Rafi.
