The relationship between the tetragrammaton and Exodus 3:14?

I seem to have missed something in my study of the divine Name(s).

How did we get from אֶֽהְיֶה in Exodus 3:14 to יְהוָה in Genesis 15:7 and other parts of the Tanach?

I ask this question because Yahweh, the agreed upon pronunciation of the tetragrammaton, is supposed to represent God's revealed name to Israel.

Why isn't it אֶֽהְיֶה as the Lord told Moses to relay to the people? Where did the י come from?

Thanks for any help you can give me to clear up my confusion.
