Although some say that when King Charles II prepared a place for his son James to wed Anne Scott that he made him Duke of Monmouth, to go along with the title of Duke of Buccleuch which he gained from the marriage of Anne when he took her name. She was the last in line to have the title transferred from her father.
According to the story having been told through the generations of John Scott being rewarded the title from King Kenneth MCCalpin the first known King of Scotland around 750 AD.
As the story goes the king was deer hunting when Scott had killed a buck with his bare hands and carried it about one mile up hill to where the king was sitting on top of his horse having not seen deer all morning close up. After Scott layed the buck before him, the king bestowed the title
of Duke of Buccleuch in honor of the incredible feat and that being the location of where it occurred. Buccleuch was the area or land of the buck as it meant. The title transferred through generations and nearly died at Anne Scott if not for James the son of King Charles II.
