I was once had the priviledge to study in Japan and I saw the difference of Japan and Philippines in terms of cleanliness of our environment.

I happened to visit North Harbour last night together with my japanese friend and it was him who noticed how dirty the place was. I noticed it too but I tried to ignore from that topic for it might end up to a bad discussion. I'm a mylot subscriber and onced mentioned it too as one of my topic, however it fell into a depht ear.

I have seen other places like Australia, Canada, Japan, US, Europe and Singapore and truly these places are clean and beautiful. It is appalling to compare the Phillipines with them. I understand that the Philippines is a poor country but, the more that I felt poorer the way I looked at the dirty places of Navotas, Tondo area, and going home as we passed by Divisoria. It is natural thing to be poor, but being dirty is abnormal.

In my simple way, I tried helping cleaning the seashore along baywalk area but time by time the garbage is accumulating more and more. At home in Mandaluyong at least garbage management is a little bit better and people are digging old canal to prevent them from clogging up which will also help in preventing flooding in the area during this rainy season. Truly, it was a relief that our area is clean which is too a reason for a good health of the community.

Yes, I am happy in my area but I always feel a sting in my heart every time I see places such as last night. Oh yes, I too remember every saturday as I accompany my wife going to market and at the back of the market was a river, a stingking and dying river full of garbage. As I sat and wait for my wife doing the marketing, I always thought of how I could help this river. But how? Yes it need money to do it but it can be done. I remember once i tried too, and stopping a lady trying to dump her garbage in the river and what I got was a " Mura, putang ina mo wala kang pakialam dito". Oh well yes; why should I care anyway and I simply smiled away.

I think, we can clean our environment if we have will to do it like other countries around us. The support of the government will play a big role, if not, soon our place will be a dying world. We can always develop and raised the livelihood of the poor, but cleanliness is always part of progress.

I was in front of the tv news this morning and I was happy to see the action of government to distribute leaflets along MRT stations, bus station and giving the passing public the information on rules of littering, and have apprehended a guy who disposes a candy wrapper just elsewhere is fined of 500 pesos to 1000 or be given a community work of cleaning the street.

It is a good sign by the government to promote and has the will to implement cleanliness and protection of environment. If this move will go on, little by little, we can educate everyone the proper disposal of garbage and soon our environment will be clean

It looks like not one soul wants to read my topic, but I love writing anyway. And one of the issue this morning was about cigarrete butts. Yes, maybe we cannot stop people from smoking but at least this people should learn how to dispose their cigarette butts properly and smoke only on designated areas.

Singapore was one of the model places to imitate. In Singapore, the government have set up smoking areas along the roads where people use to wait, a big ashtray made of cement can be seen to signify a place where people can smoke and a place to dispose their butts. Last July, I visited Davao and they are following the same style, stablishment where people use to meelee are often with an asthray. Makati was one of the places with stringent rule on smoking but you will not find an ashtray somewhere. Therefore, smokers tend to sneak and find ways to smoke, but their buts are thrown away elsewhere too that will add up to rubbish along the streets.

I heard of cases where smokers are apprehended by police and being find, but this again are ways for police to do bribing for not one police had ever apprehended the smoker and turn over his loot to the government.

I think, let the smoker smoke in proper places, they too are paying taxes but at least they should be provided with an asthray. Smoking is not good for the health but it is an old generation vice that not one government in the world that succeded in stopping them.

Not unlike the japanese with discipline to smoke, they donot just dispose their butts elsewhere as they like, they are provided with a cigarette butt pocket.

While I was discussing this issue to my friends, they say that one of the problem in the Philippnes was the lack of dump sites. Probably yes but there are other ways to do it.

I remember my stay in Japan and I happen to visit a FAIR where different designs of garbage segregations management and processing was put on exhibit. I'm not sure if we have this kind of waste management plant in the philippines. But it will be advantageous to all if we have them. Maybe, the only problem in the Philippines is our lack of system. The proper segregation of our garbage when we deliver them to the garbage truck is a need for everyone to learn.

It is an awful sight to see children scouring at garbage dump site doing everything to make a living and helping their parents survive. With the waste management plant, these people can be employed, at least a kind of work more decent to see. I understand that every municipality is spending money for the hauling and transport of garbage to dumpsite, then it is also possible for the waste management plant to stand alone where payment coming from municipalities will be use as salaries to operators of the waste management plant. Plus the elements of garbage that are collected for re use are sold will add up to its revenues. And with the inclusion of turbine plant within the plant can generate it own electricity and fuel to be use is the garbage itself. Just my weird imagination.

Sir, I've bee asking my parents the same questions. I actually have this extreme colonial mentality that has apparently gone too preposterous. I mean, there came a time when I made up my mind of leaving the Philippines because of all the things that some irresponsible people do. But then, I realized that if I want a change in this country, I should be the one to start it.
I'm glad God showed me your posts because I was reminded that there are still people who care.
Anyway, I agree that there is still hope for our country and I pray that people would realize that even a small act of responsibility like not throwing candy wrappers anywhere is very crucial for this country's sake.
God bless.

Dear yzsa8eunice

I would like to laugh upon receiving your response today because i wrote this article for almost a year now. I am keen on writing something before but it seems that my write ups are not even important to a Pilipino. What I know of a Pilipino was that they love to grandstand to many listener because of politics, few are working in the government but they are never notice. Even if we talk and discussed something good for the benefit of the country yet their name was not in, surely they will never listen. Specially so that the topic was garbage and who you think would like to work on garbage, di ba. Some times even my hope for the country is dying but mind you, I visited Baguio last May 20 to 22 and I was surprised of what I saw. In Baguio, smoking is prohibited and people are truly apprehended and fined. See Baguio now compared from 5 years ago, it is clean and people don't just smoke everywhere. Which means that we can implement this effort if the law applies to everyone.

It is always nice to see a clean place, it is beautiful. Look at a place where garbage is everywhere,it is pitiful. LOL. Thanks for your time eunice
