Replied to:  The british could not break the courage of Maharaja Ranjit Singh...
I think the primary concern of the Sikhs was to ward off every attempt to break the emerging sikh kingdom. There were Dogras and many other rulers ever ready to incite Maharaja ranjit Singh to lock horns with the britishers. But the sikh ruler was wity enough to be mesmerised by such insensible enterprises. At times when war could have been avoided he was ever ready to do it.HE knew britishers were not the only enemy the muhammadan rulers too were waiting for every oppurtunity to test the strength of sikhs.Guru gobind singh imbibed in singh a legacv of seldom betraying valour which played a pivotal role in assiduosly knitting the sikh kingdom into a unsurmountable nation.the legacy of valour was carried forward by Maharaja ranjit singh who turned sikh kingdom into an erstwhile kindom.but it can be gainsaid that in the process he had to resort to questionable tactics to keep the treasury running in Lahore. When there was Famine in kashmir on account of ever increasing taxation coupled with the fury of nature, the son of the Maharaja who was the iGovernor of Kashmir at that time paid no attention to remove the pitiful conditio of people. Thus in short it can be said that the Sikh rulers had to consume major part of their energy in keeping the kingdom united rather than focussing on civil administration. Therefore sikhs were not able to build a comprehensive policy for the civil administration
