No-one knows the time, only God. There will be signs, however. We need to go through 1,000 years of peace before it happens. We are nowhere near that sign of God. So rest easy. Walk softly but carry a big stick, as Teddy Roosevelt said.

The end of Earth will involve it igniting into a star. See the thread the Logic of the Universe.

Well according to mayan and some indian calenders it is 2012, the end or fate! but it's not true, the end of the world can not be predicted and not only technology, there are thousands of ways of the end of the world or human fate! epidemics, supernova, earthquakes, global warming, freezing of the earth, and many more others. but I do not think the end is so near.
it is still many years left and the most possible end is the explosion of the sun or whatever the process is, ( very big to explain). but as for technology is concerned it is in our hands that we use it for good or destruction like atom bombs and all! we should use technology wisely and try to conserve energy!

There's a big difference between the end of the planet and the end of civilization as we understand it. You seem to be speaking about civilization but putting it in terms of the planet. This is confusing.

first, both civilization and the planet are in constant flux but, while civilization has ended many times, the planet hasn't. There have been times when the surface of the planet was far less hospitable than it is now but there has never been a time when it was devoid of life, once life began...
at some point in the very distant future, the planet will be eaten by a dying star. As the sun nears the end of its nuclear life, it will expand and eventually engulf this world and others before either exploding or becoming a small dark very dense ball. No matter what happens to the sun, this will be the end for Earth.

as far as civilization goes, well, like I said, it has ended before and will undoubtedly end again. Best just to relax and enjoy what's around you.
For every season and all that

Oh gorsh Dawn! You're amazing! But, I will have to disagree with you on one tiny little part. How are we to know if the world has ever ended before? The latest we can go back into our Earths history is the Dinosaur era. Yes, of coarse the Earth is a billion-trillin years old, but who's to say that a billion-trillion-million years ago there was another Earth here that simply didn't develope the way this one has and couldn't live for long so, eventually died? Every living thing has to die eventually. The Earth is no more than plants, molecules, and all that happy stuff. I just think that the world has ended a thousand times over and will keep doing so.

But, yes, I do not think that the Mayan calendar holds any fate to our world what so ever. It just simply ends, most likely because their race ended. Just like you said, civilizations have ended and will not cease to do so.

Cherish,

geological records go back well before the time of the dinosaurs. I have seen with my very own eyes dust from the Permian epoch in an ice core.

The physical conditions on this planet have allowed many time for the rise and fall of animals. Humanity rose during these chaotic conditions but civilization is a different matter.

Ancient primitive apes were the first species to evolve up out of all Earth's rumblings and, for a long time, we lived in caves or on the plains as hunters and gatherers...so much potential yet still so primitive. Then the ice melted at the end of the Pleistocene and the planet got warm and wet and, despite a few hiccups in the Younger Dryas and Little Ice Age, Earth has remained blissfully stable for about 40k years.

Civilization was born in this warm, wet cradle after crawling up out of Africa and settling around a lost valley that we now call the Black Sea. It began in other places too, but along that (as it was then) vast fresh water lake. Today the Black Sea is salt water but it is fresher than most oceans. Along the shores of that fresh water, we learned agriculture and society and began the long technological trek towards the future where you and I now converse through the air as easily as if we were standing next to each other.

There are two very excellent books I will leave you with if you would like to know more about this. The first is called Noah's Flood by William Ryan and Walter Pitman, ISBN 0-684-81052-2, 1998, Simon and Shuster. The second is Civilization Before Greece and Rome by H.W.E. SKaggs, ISBN 0-300-04440-2, US publishing date 1989, Yale University Press.

the first book is an easy read for a smart woman like you but the second maybe challenging.

if there was a civilization BEFORE the beginning of this one, there is no geological or archeological evidence for one. I DO have theories but very little proof. The only proof we have that something may have come before us is myth and legend and some interesting megalithic structures which modern science spends a lot of time trying to explain away. If you would like to talk theories...I have books for that too.

the Mayan long count calendar was made to speak of a larger time structure than we are accustomed to dealing with. It about galactic time, not mere solar or earth time. It was also about cycles of precession and other large movements of the planet that occur very slowly. I have books for THIS too. LOL

enjoy

I had a complete brain fart lol. Sometimes, I wish I had a time machine so I could go back in time and see how it all ACTUALLY began. I am a strong beleiver in the Big Bang, and that humans are merely an accident, but I am open to new and exciting theories. I would ADORE to hear yours some day :)

When I get the chance to go to my county library I will be sure to hunt those books down. I will look in my school library, but our range of books with meningful knowlegde are not too plentiful. It's quit sad actually.

I thank-you a million times over for the complement my dear :) Most people find me rather stupid, and laugh when I say that I'm actually pretty smart. They just see me as that "party/punk rocker/rebel girl", but I beleive I am much more than just a couple labels.

Party punk rebel girls of the world unite

one of my favorite modern artists is Marilyn Manson...and it doesn't get a whole lot more rebellious that that!( I also adore screamo...I've decided that being deaf as an old woman won't be such a bad thing, it will give me an excuse to shout at everyone LOL)

I'm not a big bang person. I go in for steady state theory and see the structure of the universe as probably more like the structure of a galaxy...a large spiral with a singularity at its core, than a bomb blast. I've read all of Hawking's theories on black holes and am well versed on Einsteins general and special relativity...let's say, I'm not convinced.
I've come to the idea that gravity is the big player in the cosmos but, because gravity is really unmeasurable and unquantifiable, most of our physicists ignore it as a major force.

This universe is not about destruction, it is about creation of new from old. Black holes do not eat, they rearrange and clean up. Did you know there are no pictures of the blackness of a black hole? The pictures are stunning portrayals of light. In that light lies the answer. What the black holes eat is unimportant...what they give off is.

mathematics are not the universal language Cherish because they have no poetry...

one of my fav quotes; from 2001, A Space Odyssey; Dave, as he looks into the anomaly... "My God, it's full of stars!"

Haha! The world would be a chaotic and wonderful mess of rebellion, intelligence, and of coarse parties lol.

Oh my great Goddess! I think I may love you Dawn my dear!! Screamo is my all time fav genre and rock and metal. I haven't really listened to much of Marilyn Mansons work, but I have been meaning to look into it. My favorite band at this moment is Avenged Sevenfold, ever listened to them?

Just the other night I watched Hawking's theory on extraterrestrial life and wormholes.

See, that's what I always thought. Not that a Black Hole was full of destruction and sorrow and agonizing pain, but new life, changes. Or even, that Black Holes are what create other galaxies. Maybe, when things are eaten by a Black Hole and everything living upon ot dies, it gets spit out in some distant place and in time forms a whole new galaxy. I may just be dreaming, but hay; it could happen lol :)

How old are you, if you don't mind my asking?

43 going on 16.
Avenged Sevenfold is on the play list being turned into cds for mothers day so I can play them really loud in my car, which is a hobby that annoys local cops.

You almost have the idea about black holes but we don't need another galaxy for the stuff to get spit back into....they spit the rewritten info (matter) back into THIS universe....reality is ALL about recycling the old into the new...bury a dead man under a tree see and someday his great grand children will be eating him as apples kind of thing
THAT is reality...not the concept of destruction...the concept of resurrection
as far as alternates go...I'm into the alternate DIMENSION thing...the hexagon on Saturn...voices in the rings... zero point energy, the lost planet, the demon star, Mars as the civilized moon of a planet that was destroyed...humans as a very ancient race, just not one from Earth that kind of thing...
I probably did too many mind altering chemicals as a kid...not, I DID do too many...but that's another post!
and listen to Marilyn...."this is a black collar song, put it in your middle finger, sing along, use your fist and not your mouth!"
good stuff...he rebels against even his sexual identity...and that's too cool for school my friend....try, the Golden Age of Grotesque.
"no, this isn't your song we can't all get along its too hard to hold hands when your hands a fist!"
you'll love it!

Hahaha What's your favorite song by Avenged Sevenfold?

Ok...I have absolutly no idea what the hexagon on Saturn, voices in the rings, zero point gravity, the lost planet, or the demon star is. Lol. I feel dumb asking, but if I don 't ask, how will I ever learn? It all sounds ubber interesting, and I would be pleased to have you enlighten me.

Mind altering chemicals??

I will do :) I've always been interested in listening to him some day, but don't usually have the chance. I broke my mothers labtop about a month ago, so yea; I can't really search for him at this moment, but I am friends with someone who listens to him.
I'll be sure to ask her :)

How many years of schooling would I have to go through to be a college Lit/Science proffesor?
