Around 100,000 people traveled to San Francisco in 1967 for the Summer of Love. Time Magazine ran a cover story that explained Hippie philosophy:

"Do your own thing, wherever you have to do it and whenever you want. Drop out. Leave society as you have known it. Leave it utterly. Blow the mind of every straight person you can reach. Turn them on, if not to drugs, then to beauty, love, honesty, fun."

By the end of the summer, Haight-Ashbury could no longer sustain the crowds who had flocked there. Violence and crime skyrocketed and there were problems with homelessness, disease, drug addiction and malnourishment.
