Sometime in the 1950's (likely) or 1960's (possible) Elf Oil or maybe it was Elf Oil France sponsored a chinese junk voyage somewhere in Asia. It was probably China to -?
The boat was called "ELF CHINE" as I remember.

I have had no success finding a reference to this voyage on the internet. I would like to re-acquaint myself with the details of the trip. I also made a chinese junk trip (of 8,500 miles) it was in 1961-62 and it terminated (successfully as planned) at Northern New Zealand. Perhaps this underlines my interest in the Elf Oil venture.

Perhaps someone remembers the Elf Chine voyage and could tell me where to learn about it?

I, too, have been searching for information on Elf Chine. She passed through Port Elizabeth, South Africa sometime between 194 and 1986 when we were building our Chinese junk replica Tin Hau. The only reference I have been able to find about a junk sponsored by Elf was a project called Jonque'tion 79 - whihc refers to a junk being built with sponsorship money from ELF, aquitaine, but this reference came from a paper in Philadelphia, USA and the boat was going by a different name, "The Lady of Canton or some such. I would be very interested to hear about your travels in your junk. If you receive this, please reply!

To lyndachidell - I am not used to this website, lynda. I would like to establish email contact with you but am hesitant about doing this here. My boat was "Golden Lotus" the book about the voyage was "Voyage of the Golden Lotus" published in 1962 and still available in used books shops, author was my brother Brian, publisher Reeds,no ISBN number. G L was 13 metres LOA. Please reply via this site and I will research whether to include my email address. Our 1961-62 voyage was HK to Singapore to Sunda Strait to Christmas Island to Rinca Island to Portuguese East Timor to Thursday Island to Barrier Reef coast to Sydney to Mangonui in NZ to Auckland
