Someone told me to put marble, tile or wood over the top of my radiators for heating, so the heat would be forced out the sides and not go straight to the ceiling. Is this statement true?

Someone told me to put marble, tile or wood over the top of my radiators for heating, so the heat would be forced out the sides and not go straight to the ceiling. Is this statement true?
