Some years ago I read in the New York Times (Book Review, I believe) that as a young college student Prof. Keene had been in the library stacks and looked at a selection of books in Japanese and realized that if he took courses in Japanese, he would be able to read those books. Is this true or apocryphal? It's a great story, either way.
