Smart Lipo Myth: It leaves scars

Reality Check:
While it’s true that other liposuction techniques do leave scars, Smart Lipo doesn’t (unless it’s badly done). Fat cells absorb the energy coming from the laser used to assist liposuction.

It’s a low amount of radiation in the near infrared band but powerful enough to cause the excretion of fat from the fat cells. If the light beam traverses the fat layer and reaches the skin from below it is absorbed by it as well.

Since a thin tube carries the laser, the required incision is just a few millimeters. It’s so small, that many surgeons leave it as is, without suture.

As we said before, patients will have no scars, unless the procedure is done the wrong way. For example, if the surgeon burns too much sub-dermal tissue in pursuit of a tighter skin.

Smart Lipo Myth: Traditional liposuction works best

Reality Check:
In traditional liposuction, a surgeon moves a cannula (which is a thin metallic tube) back and forth to disrupt the fat cells.

During a laser-assisted lipo, the surgeon goes beyond mere suction and uses the laser to “liquefy” the oily contents of fat cells. Depending on the area being treated, he may remove or not the liquefied fat, because the body can take care of the removal by itself when the amount of “melted” fat is not significant. Here’s a big difference from traditional lipo that always requires vacuuming.

Smart Lipo Myth: It’s a solution for obese people

Reality Check:
In fact, this technique is most appropriate for patients who are not too overweight. Moreover, it was not developed to cure obesity. Unless obese patients make substantial changes in their eating habits, they will gain fat in other areas.

Smart Lipo Myth: It’s ideal for patients with cellulite

Reality Check:
Laser-assisted lipo has nothing to do with cellulite. Why? Cellulite is the result of fat protruding through the connective tissue of the skin; Smart Lipo targets fat cells beneath the skin.

Smart Lipo Myth: Patients have loose skin after surgery

Reality Check:
That only happens after traditional liposuction, which only removes fat cells. Smart Lipo, on the contrary, tightens the skin. Yes, the laser beam actually starts a tightening process that takes about three months to show full results.

The extent to which the skin tightens up after laser-assisted lipo depends on age and the elasticity of the tissue. Nevertheless, a competent surgeon will work so as to avoid too much loose skin without burning too many blood vessels to prevent scars.
