Scottish Counties of Stirlingshire and Perthshire

I am terribly confused about Scottish counties and locations. Hopefully, someone on this forum can help me understand.

I have an ancestor, Charles Brown, whom I found on the 1891 census in New Monklands, Lanarkshire. He states on this census that he was born in St. Ninians, Stirlingshire. His wife, Agnes was born in Bannockburn, Stirlingshire and one of his sons, Thomas, was born in Haddinton, Haddingshire. I understand that the county of Haddingshire no longer exists and is now considered East Lothian.

Everything I have read indicates that both St. Ninians and Bannockburn are still part of Sterlingshire, however, I have had a couple of people tell me these two places are actually in Perthshire. And then.....there is Lanarkshire.

I could certainly use some help.
