I bought a new home in a subdivision in Maryland. The builder put down sod but lacked doing so for several feet up to the property line in the back yard. As I try to grow grass there I am finding it very difficult because...the base dirt below the grass is porous. It is an old forested area and the dirt is not really dirt, its more like an accumulation of old rotted vegetation and is almost like sand or loose dirt. Unfortuantely, it doesn't hold water, the water just runs straight through and seed or sod won't stay moist.

What to do?
