When Mendeleev created his periodic table, he left gaps for unknown elements with properties appropriate to the gaps. He gave them provisional names using the prefixes from Sanskrit, eka, dvi, and tri.

Mendeleev predicted the existance of protractinium in 1871; it was officially named in 1949.
